SPEAKER AND SUBJECT: Dr. Kris Chittur – Comparison of church and state issues in the U.S. and India

SUMMARY OF TALK

There is a tremendous difference on the separation of church and state issue between the U.S. and India, which is not logical. In the U.S. we can do whatever we want. In India there is an abuse of power causing scandals.  The India court of appeals deals with religious matters.  Religious issues are very big. Hindus are 87% of the population.  Christians are 2%.  Muslims can have four wives. The marriage laws seem to be back to the stone age. In Islamic tradition, wives have no say in their lives. In Moslem Sharia law, all the men have to say is one word three times in front of two witnesses and the marriage is over.  India is Western-world oriented now but skepticism remains the bottom line. We are what we are!
