SUMMARY OF TALK
Wells Fargo and Company was founded in 1852. Henry Wells and William Fargo established an express service from San Francisco to New York City. It carried passengers, freight and mail and specialized in shipping gold and silver from western mines. The company successfully bridged the transition from stagecoach to transcontinental trains. The roof of the stagecoach was used for carrying luggage and extra seating. The wheels were painted bright yellow and the body was pomegranate red. Most importantly the company delivered mail reliably and as fast as possible. A “shotgun messenger” would sit on the top next to the driver. Wells College in Aurora, NY, now Rochester, was founded in 1868.
