Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is located in Sleepy Hollow, NY and is a superior hospital for the Mid-Hudson communities.  It has a high reputation for blood donations, every donor qualifies and has it’s own facility within the hospital.  Donors qualify for participation in discounts from local businesses.  Briarcliff Manor has 13 restaurants and  businesses offering these discounts, Tarrytown has 27, Ossining 18 and Sleepy Hollow 6.  Blood donations can be given by each person on a regular basis. Consider donating and help save a life.  You can also donate your own blood for need during medical procedures.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Dr. Rolande Hodel, Cameroon-Aids free Africa Update

SUMMARY OF TALK

This was Dr. Hodel’s seventh trip to help Cameroon become Aids free.  Our $500 grant provided sewing and knitting machines.  The women make pullovers and sweaters but men take over the more complicated tasks.  Money for treating HIVAids is the main goal.  Antibiotics are given and help but some people die soon after.  There are no doctors in the clinic and it is dirty with no bathroom.  Village elders make psychological diagnoses.  The drugs are inadequate and elders say “give me more.”  She was often  hungry and felt dirty and was anxious to leave after nine days but will return to Cameroon.  Dr. Hodel looks forward to talking to us again.

SUMMARY OF TALK

Ben Sheen's parents were both musicians. While majoring in music at Oxford University, with the local Rotary Club, he applied for an Ambassadorial scholarship, which was granted to the tune of $26,000 for a year's learning. He picked the Julliard School in Manhattan and is majoring there in the organ.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Roderick Fraser – US Navy Operations in the Arabian  Gulf.

SUMMARY OF TALK

Commissioner Fraser was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in 2006, the largest in New England and has greatly improved training, readiness and professionalism.  After being commissioned in the Navy in 1986, he spent 20 years culminating in commanding USS Underwood, a guided missile ship  home ported in Mayport, FLA.  He led the ship and crew to the Northern Arabian Gulf and was responsible for protecting the Iraqi offshore oil terminals at Al Basrah and Khor Alamaya.  He was also responsible for training the Iraqi Army in anti-terrorism to enable them to protect themselves.  He has been awarded the meritorious service medal, two gold stars, achievement medals, unit awards and commandments.
