SPEAKER AND SUBJECT:  Dr. Sy Yuter on Kauai Rotary Clubs

SUMMARY OF TALK

Sy gave talks (on the Iran nuclear issue) to three of the six Aloha Rotary Clubs in Kauai, Hawaii. They are the Kapa'a Kauai Rotary club in Kapa'a on the East coast, the West Kauai club in Waimea and the Hanalie Bay Rotary Club in Princeville, Kauai, at the North coast, and Sy displayed their flags. Elinor joined him and thus maintained her perfect attendance of nearly four years with Sy at 23 years. Each club was different. The Kapa'a club had the minimum program but displayed the Hawaii flag (surprise, with a Union Jack in its upper left corner) together with the American Flag and no other banner. It met at a pasta restaurant with each member given a choice of two main dishes plus a salad. The West Kauai is a small huggy-kissy club with its leader handing out a cv of Sy from his web site, and Elinor and Sy ate off the extensive menu of a very fancy restaurant with the club picking up Elinor's cost, contrary to the other two clubs. The Kapa'a club gave Sy a nice pen, the West Kauai club an expensive collection of local passion fruit sweets but the Hanalei club only offered to give a book to the local library which Sy was asked to sign and take credit for the gift.  The Hanalie Bay club met at the most expensive hotel in Kauai ($350 a night) and the ($25) lunch was only a pasta dish and a chocolate cookie, plus ice tea. The Hanalie Bay club had the most banners and the most in attendance, nearly 50, with many visiting Rotarians, mostly from what they call stateside.

ROTARY MINUTE: Sy and Elinor on Kauai Rotary Clubs.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT –Karen Miller on Celiac Disease and her Three Dogs Gluten Free Bakery[-

Celiac Disease is caused by an inherited gene. Her first attack was so severe it felt like a heart attack.  She thinks an infection triggered her disease.  Celiac is a sensitivity to gluten, especially in flour that gives cohesiveness to the dough.  One in one hundred people have this autoimmune disease.  Domino's Pizza is now gluten free.  Unfortunately some hospitals are not aware of this disease.  She has zero tolerance to gluten, even in things like lipstick or lip gloss.  Ms. Miller will soon be married and will make her own wedding cake in her gluten free bakery  in Briarcliff Manor.  She and her fiancé have to divide their kitchen for her side to be completely gluten free.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Rachel - Saturday 21^st there will be a blood drive held at the Briarcliff Manor Fire Dept from 9 – 3 and 12 – 4. There will be an open house at the Fire Department as far as countywide volunteer recruitment day with tours of the department and apparatus.

ROTARY MINUTE: Peter Garth – 25 years ago Rotary was all male members.  Now there are 16% female internationally, 80% of clubs now have women members and there are 72 woman District Governors.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Keith Safian, CEO Phelps Memorial Hospital, 2011 Overview

                                                                 SUMMARY OF TALK

Phelps is a community and tertiary medical facility.  As of last year the budget was at a high of 200 million dollars.  Their MD staff has increased from 189 to 457 physicians. They have 50 pediatricians with affiliation to WMC Maria Ferrari Children’s Hospital.  They have built Kendall on Hudson, independent living facility with many services provided. As of July 1, 2012 Phelps will be an official teaching hospital.  They now have medical student training and six medical residents.  They are in there best financial position ever.  Additions and upgrade include a new ER, new Maternity ward, new Dobbs Ferry Center.  They offer: Largest Hyperbaric chamber, Pulmonary Rehab, Pain Center, 1^st to perform surgery for artificial spine disc, Geriatrics center, Affiliation with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer center, a new lobby, Hospice care, voice and swallowing center and much more.  We are minutes from one of the best medical facilities in the state.

Help me! I want to build affordable houses in Briarcliff Manor. We are  building a home in Mamaroneck. There is is a proposed zero energy home in Yonkers. In Pound Ridge a home is being completed. In Sommers a home is under construction and in Bedford a home is being completed. Our group could provide housing for our police, restaurant workers and maintenance workers. On Macy Road, where Rotary used to meet, the Rec Center, we could fix it. Isn't that pretty good?

SUMMARY OF TALK

People should register to donate an organ to save a life.  Most religions approve of it.  There is a severe shortage of organs for life saving transplants.  Thousands await tissue donation such as skin for burn victims or eye donations for cornea transplants.  Without these surgeries many die or remain disabled.  Transplants give people a chance to resume full and productive lives.  Anyone can decide to be a donor regardless of age or medical history.  Enroll in the New York State Donor Life registry by signing the donor box on your drivers license or non-driver ID card application.  You can also enroll through the New York State Health Departments web site, www.nyhealth.gov.  After death donations include bone and connective tissue, corneas, eyes, heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, skin, small intestines and veins.

SUMMARY OF TALK

First, thanks Rotary for support of the Ossining Food Pantry. All should have a will. If you die without a will New York State will determine how your estate is disbursed and who administers it. Have to have will probated. (Probate means authenticating the will as that of the deceased and is done in Probate Court.) Filing fee for probate below estate of $500,000 is $625. If more than $500,000, fee is $1250. Have to find witnesses, but to avoid that, should have an affidavit of witnesses that you of sound mind, etc. If you die without a will, then have to seek people who have claims. So should have will. Years ago in one day, would have letters testamentary. Now it takes two to three weeks. Or can have a revocable trust becoming irrevocable upon death. Then have to make sure that the glove of the assets fits the hand of document to make sure that every asset that you own is put in your name so the trustee can dispose of your assets. Have also a will at the same time. So have the will to make sure that if asset not put in trust, covered by the will. But suppose have a disability son or daughter, so want to set up a supplemental revocable trust for that child. Give power of invasion to guardian to determine if child is able to receive the full amount or just the proceeds. Lawyer needs to know information to minimize taxes. In second marriage situation, should take care of children of first marriage. Second wife gets a life estate, but when she dies assets go to children of first marriage. Federal tax exemption from tax is five million, but New York State is only one million.
