SUMMARY
OF TALK
The
first prison in New York City was started in 1791. In 1828 Sing Sing
prison was built and inmates transferred from NYC. Current
prisoners, all of whom have committed felonies, are at Sing Sing
now. The new prison was a model of reform. Then got to prison
only by steamboat on the Hudson River or by the then muddy Albany
State Road, now Route 9. President Lincoln visited the prison in the
1860s. The prison had an electric chair to kill prisoners which was
last used in 1947 to kill prisoners Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for
spying for Communist Russia. New cells added in 1929 had running
water and a toilet. Famous wardens included Wayne Seltzer,
Thomas Osborne and John Lewis. Several movies were made about
the prison. There was even a bird sanctuary in the 1920s. Rachel
recalls a break out around 1988. There are about 2000 prisoners
there now.
