Bridgetown is the capital. Sugar is a chief crop and tourism is most important to its economy. Lisa is the Rotary Ambassador Scholar for 2012-2013 from the Rotary Club of Barbados and is at Columbia University in NYC seeking a masters in sustainability management. Although born in Barbados she speaks like a New Yorker. During her first semester as a Rotary Ambassador Scholar in this Columbia University program, she knows she is in the best place for her. Lisa connected with other ambassadorial scholars and the District Governor Greg Arcaro and Helen Lynch who also spoke to our club. As 2013 comes into focus she has become even more aware of the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” in her day to day actions. Her passion in life is to help other people and to be involved.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Professor Arthur Romano – Conflict Resolution
Summary of Talk
Professor Romano is a Rotary Peace Fellow for life. He hopes we can work together and prevent youth violent behavior. To achieve better mental health we can partner with the schools to find students who need help. Early involvement in the home is essential. Self awareness needs to be taught as well as the ability to communicate. Homicide is the leading cause of death among students age 10 – 24. There are not enough mental health services in our schools. Compassion for others needs to be taught. The quality of our relationships to others is a key to conflict resolution.

Hidden Treasures of Korea
SUMMARY OF TALK
Koreans in 1205 BC called their country Chosen which means Morning Calm. The people are similar looking to Chinese and Japanese. Seoul is the capital of South Korea and they consider their city as the sixth largest in the world. The speakers wore beautiful traditional dress. In Seoul, female servants in government offices were given thirty days of leave after the birth of a child and the husband thirty days of paternity leave. The rights of prisoners were also considered, inquiring about the temperature of cells and whether they were clean. Wildly considered the greatest legacy of King Sejong the Great, he invented the Korean alphabet called Hangulo. Created in 1443 by the King, it consists of 28 consonant and vowel letters corresponding to the principal of Ying-Yang.
