SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Gil Chimes – My Show Business Life

SUMMARY OF TALK

Gil Chimes started performing with his father at age six.  He is an expert harmonica player and plays the drums. He became so expert and so famous that he performed with Frank Sinatra and three Presidents. They play at weddings and other family occasions. His father was invited to join a Rotary Club in Mt Vernon where they lived. Unfortunately live music is a dead industry.  He loves live music, some from orchestras. As a Rotarian he made up missed meetings in France and Italy.  He played a few notes on a hand-held harmonica for Elinor.  We wish we had asked him to play a few songs.

SUMMARY OF TALK

The Rotary Club in Cortland Manor was chartered in 2011. This is the first Rotary Community Corp, of Keon, of its kind in the world.  The goals of the Rotary Community Corp programs are to encourage handicap-challenged individuals in the responsibility for the improvement of the village neighborhoods, to recognize the dignity and value of all useful occupations, to mobilize self help activities, to improve the quality of life and to encourage the development of human potential to its fullness within the context of their local culture and community.  The club has 20 members and deals with special needs of others.  Sharon’s son has the mental ability of a three-year-old but understands that he wants to and is able to help others.  The club doesn’t look at disabilities, but at abilities.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT –Brian Conybeare – Proposed New Tappan Zee Bridge.

There are three proposals for a new bridge which will be built just north of the existing one.  The number one favored by officials and local population is considered to be the most attractive and the most reasonably priced. Construction is set to take place in 2013 and may take up to five years. Dredging the bottom of the Hudson River is one problem.  The problem with the existing bridge is that there is no turn-around lane and a fracture could be imminent.  The possibility of a catastrophe is double that of any other New York State bridge.  Time is of the essence to begin construction. Preferably the over-all favorite will be chosen.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Professor Ainsley Adams – Teaching in Guatemala

Summary of Talk

Professor Adams created the idea of an educational experience in Guatemala.  He teaches at Pace University and Fran Wills works with him on his projects.  He brings professors and pre-service teachers to Guatemala to develop professional methodologies to Maya teachers in one of the most beautiful countries  in the world but also one of the poorest.

New Tappan Zee Bridge Project: Cuomo Adviser to Address Briarcliff Rotary

Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the Governor for the new Tappan Zee Bridge Project, will address the Rotary Club of Briarcliff Manor on December 7, 2012, on the proposed new bridge.     Read more about it on the Pleasantville-Briarcliffmanor-Ptach HERE.

Hurricane Sandy relief in the news

The Rotary Club of Briarcliff Manor has made a cash donation to the Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts organized by Rotarians for victims in downtown Manhattan. The Club appeals to local residents to donate generously to these victims.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Ben Wolff – The Box As a Gift

Ben Wolff entertained us with his cello.  Seated, he played high notes and low notes and soft notes, explaining all about the music of the cello.  He talks about “being boxed in may be a good thing”.  In 1954 Life Magazine published an article on why young American school children were not reading well.  Boredom was the answer and it was deemed necessary that children have fun reading.  Two hundred simple words were decided on to teach seven year olds.  Fantasy and whimsy might make reading fun.  Rhyming words and sentences could make it happen.  Ted Geinsler, (Dr. Seuss), wrote his book, The Cat In The Hat.  It was 61 pages long and the children could not put it down and started them liking to read.  Ben gave us all a small box with a chocolate inside.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Heruka Ue -   Japanese History

SUMMARY OF TALK

Ken Shimazu introduced our 19-year-old speaker from Japan.  She reviewed Japanese history.  First called Edo then Kyoto which was the capital until the late 19^th century, then Tokyo.  She came to New York because she was advised that young Japanese study here.  She is a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.  Her dream is to have her own fashion magazine like Vogue.  She was advised to apply for the scholarship and a Rotary Club in Japan sponsored her trip.  She attends the Parson School of Design to prepare for her future career.
