Holiday Cheer

Every year on the Sunday before Christmas, the Village of Briarcliff Manor volunteer firefighters in their Santa suits come to visit every street to spread holiday cheer. We all love to see this special Santa's visit and they even give us lollipops. This video is made on 12/20/09. If you look hard enough, may be you'll find some people you know in the pictures because they are Rotarians.

Happy Holidays!

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY WEEKLY ROUNDUP - 11/29/09 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY WEEKLY ROUNDUP

November 29, 2009.

In lieu of our usual luncheon at the Briarcliff Recreation Center (it was the day after Thanksgiving), we dined this week at the world-famous Squire’s Restaurant and Bingo/Whist Facility.

It was marvelous.

Things start off to a roaring start with Sy Yuter’s hilarious impersonation of Jimmy Stewart’s version of Kate Smith’s rendering of “God Bless America”, while doing her hair. This was followed by The U.S. Treasury Secretary’s (he flew in especially for the occasion!) riveting discussion of our mounting National Debt. (He told us it was very, very large.) Then, things built to an absolutely thrilling climax with The Radio City Music Hall’s Rockettes’ rendering of “God Bless America”, all the while displaying gigantic photographs of Paul Rosen, delivering a talk on Gypsy Rose Lee’s marvelous impression of Richard Nixon, taking a shower....

As I say, it was marvelous. You really should have been there. Really, you should have!

Well…maybe next year.

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 11/20/2009 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING

November 20, 2009

THIS DATE IN HISTORY
On November 19, 1984, McDonald’s made its 50 billionth hamburger.
Our son, Michael, by actual count, has devoured at least 250 thousand of them.

TODAY’S QUOTE
You know what they say: If God had been a liberal, we wouldn’t have the Ten Commandments. We’d probably have had the Ten suggestions.

###

OPENING CEREMONY: The singing of our National Anthem was led by President Mark Seiden. Sy Yuter conducted us in a Salute to The Flag. And Bishop John brought a tear to every eye with his appeal to Our Maker for a little understanding of what it is to be human.

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: President Seiden was eloquent in his comments. He made many of them. And some were very, very interesting. (Samples supplied upon request.)

MEMBERS’ HAPPY THOUGHTS: Bob Maher announced that the basketball game between the Basketball Professionals and a Merry Band of Klutzes was a roaring success. Bob Amsterdam agreed. The score—in favor of the Basketball professionals—was 197 to 1.

Frances Chu followed with her declaration that the Annual Chinese Dinner was equally Successful and that those who were not there missed a treat. It was a a lollapalooza!

She, in turn, was followed by Sy Yuter, who revealed that today was his birthday. Sy is twenty-one. This portion of the program ended with Ernie Pacchiana’s happy announcement that

THE GRAPEFRUIT FOR OUR YEARLY SALE WAS ON ITS WAY!....Huzzah!!!

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Next week—the Friday following Thanksgiving--we will gather at Squire’s Restaurant and Automobile Repair Shop to enjoy our weekly meal. The entertainment will be provided by Mr. Paul Rosen, who will perform for us his colorful collection of exotic bird calls.

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speakers today were Mr. John Gallagher and Mr. Sean Pica, who is head of the college at Sing Sing prison.

Mr. Gallagher was interesting and Mr. Pica riveting in his account of his educational activities.

Mr. Pica told of the many prison inmates who were serious about receiving their high school equivalency diplomas, about their dedication, in many cases, to bettering themselves through education--though some of them were serving either long or life-sentences. Particularly inspiring were his stories about the immense difference education made in the life of Sing Sing inmates, how it helped change their lives and gave them something to look forward to after their release. It gave them a totally different view of themselves and of society.

Mr. Pica knows whereof he speaks: he once was a prisoner himself, for committing a crime he did not speak of.

The supreme test of Mr. Pica’s in-prison educating of prisoners: They almost never come back. They go on to do better things than they ever did before. And become different and better people than they once were.

Bravo, Mr. Pica! Would that there were more like you!

THE WEEKLY DRAWING: There were two winners of our weekly drawing. But, inasmuch as they have requested anonymity, we feel compelled to abide by their desire. Therefor, they shall remain unsaluted.

THE MEETING’S CONCLUSION: The meeting ended with Bishop John’s declaring that he was leaving the clergy to play middle-linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys football team.

Respectfully submitted by
Recording Secretary, Don Wilde

Dear Don,
Thank you for reminding us about the Chinese Dinner on Sunday, 3/15/09. It was truly a fun and memorable event that 60 Rotarians, families, and friends attended making it a success. However, I did not attend last Friday 11/20 Briarcliff Rotary meeting and I did not make that declaration. Thank you also for teaching me a new word "lollapalooza".

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 11/13/09 - by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING

November 13, 2009

IT’S FRIDAY, THE 13th!!!.

MU-HA-HA-HA!! They’re coming to get you!!!

A TRIBUTE TO CHUCKLES THE CLOWN AT HIS FUNERAL
ON THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW.

A little song
A little dance
A little seltzer
Down your pants.

 ###

OPENING CEREMONY: Our President, Mark Seiden was unable to make today’s meeting, so control was seized by Paul Rosen who comported himself with admirable aplomb, steering us through the Salute to the Flag. This was followed by a tear-jerking National Anthem heroically sung by Sy Yuter and Bishop John then rounded things off with a plea to our Maker for a little Divine understanding

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: Mr. Rosen was blessedly silent on the subject

MEMBERS’ HAPPY THOUGHTS: Filling in for the absent Bob Maher, a member reminded us of the upcoming basketball confrontation, taking place shortly at the Briarcliff High School. Rotary members will man (and woman) the mementoes table, as well as a table crammed with edible and drinkable goodies. We will make a fortune.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Instead of a speaker, we will enjoy a French Gourmet Dinner at the Heights Restaurant in Mt. Kisco. Don’t come alone! Bring your appetite!.

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Today our speaker, Michelle Muir, presented a subject that left many of us scouring our minds for telltale symptoms:Alzheimer’s Disease.

In a disturbing video she showed, it outlined the causes and the disturbing progress this progressive disease makes as it courses inexorably through far too many psyches.

Seventy percent of Alzheimer’s sufferers (there are 10 million of them!) live at home, cared for by family and friends. Caregivers are spouses, daughters, sons, siblings, grandchildren, and, with any luck, concerned close friends.

Our society as a whole is affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Today the direct costs to Medicare and Medicaid for treatment is estimated at: $148 billion annually.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s, but current treatments focus on helping loved ones manage one’s actions and mental functions. Medications don’t change the underlying disease, and help for only a few months or, at most, a few years.

Those of us who think we may be afflicted with Alzheimer’s (Symptoms: serious memory problems, sleeplessness, acute anxiety), or know someone who has these problems, should seek immediate medical help.

As of now, Alzheimer’s Disease is not curable—there are 91 drugs in clinical trials and more in the pipeline--but steps can be taken that will improve one’s chances of not being afflicted by it: exercise, a healthy diet, and engaging in mentally-challenging activities. Of course, the biggest preventative is having relatives who don’t have the disease.

One thing to keep in mind: Alzheimer’s is a journey, and medical help is on the way!

###

THE WEEKLY DRAWING: The second winner was Antonia Conte. I forgot the name of the first luck winner. (Oh! Oh! Alzheimer’s alert!)
Bishop John reportedly shot himself.

THE MEETING’S CONCLUSION: Our weekly meeting was brought to a raucous conclusion when Ernie Pacchiana did his impression of Gyspy Rose Lee and took off most of his clothes.

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 11/6/09 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING
November 6, 2006

This Day in History
November 6th, in the year 2012, has been officially designated in some quarters, as “The End of the World Day,” and will be marked by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other unpleasantnesses.

Food for Thought
There are some 10,000 various smells in the world and barely a handful of deodorants.

###

OPENING CEREMONY: President Seiden conducted the Salute To Our Flag, Sy Yuter brought us to tears with his rendition our National Anthem, and Paul Rosen concluded this portion of our opening ceremony with a remembrance of the victims of the massacre on the grounds of a U.S. Army base.

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS: President Seiden pointed out that we would soon be embarking on our yearly sale of grapefruit, and knew that we all would pitch in with glee. He then announced our guests and welcomed them. He concluded his remarks by stating that Mike Risko would be unable to serve as President of our club next year, but that he (President Seiden, not Mr. Risko) would get back to us promptly with a suitable candidate’s name.

MEMBERS’ HAPPY THOUGHTS: Ahh, there were so many! Sy Yuter proclaimed that his recent cataract surgery was a whopping success and that his eyesight has been restored to 20-20, so watch out! Zeneth Eidel hove to his feet to inform us that he was recovering successfully from prostate surgery. I was about to declare that the removal of both my arms went moderately well, and that with luck I’ll soon be back in action—but then I thought better of it, and sat down.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker next week will be Michelle Muir, whose topic will be “The War Against Alzheimer’s Disease.”

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Today’s speaker was President of ‘Life Project for Africa”, who spoke to us about “The Life Project for Africa.”

It was an excellent talk.

Mrs. Muir opened by pointing out that Life Project for Africa promotes education and health for Africans, providing homes, supporting African orphans, and tackling widespread poverty on the Dark Continent.

Her organization is partnering with Rotary International to provide needed water and, cooperating with U.S. hospitals, shipping supplies and equipment to Nija Hospital in Dar-Es-Salaam. “Life Project for Africa” also assists in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief. She also made reference to the fact that, cooperating with U.S. hospitals and health providers, her organization is shipping medical supplies and equipment to hospitals in Africa, as well as participating in Presidents Obama’s Emegencylan for AIDS relief.

Mrs. Muir then showed us a video of some of the children in Africa, who are suffering from world-wide neglect. It was heartbreaking.

She concluded by suggesting that Rotary help would be much appreciated. It would be hard to disagree with her.

Thank you for an inspiring talk, Mrs. Muir. We will certainly consider your humanitarian suggestion.

###

THE WEEKLY DRAWING: The first winner was Rodney Ertischek. I was too downcast by the announcement of the first winner to register the name of the second winner, but I think it was Joan Crawford

THE MEETING’S CONCLUSION: Our weekly meeting ending with a parade of our Chapter in Brircliff’s “Canyon of Heroes” and the handing out of candy canes by a jolly, excited Reverend Herzog.

I hate to admit it: I cried.

Recording Secretary, Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 10/30/09 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF ROTARY CLUB MEETING
October 30, 2009

THIS DAY IN HISTORY
On October 30, 1982, Portugal revised its constitution.
(Well, dammit, it’s about time!)

TODAY’S QUOTE
“He’s the only man I ever knew who had rubber pockets so he could steal soup.”
--Wilson Mizner, of a Hollywood studio chief

#####

SALUTE TO THE FLAG, OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM, AND THE PRAYER
President Mark Seiden led us in a salute to our flag, Sy Yuter rendered us all agog with his rendition of our national anthem, and Reverend Lee brought down the house with his impassioned plea to Our Maker for a brighter, sunnier tomorrow.

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: Mr. Seiden announced that our seasonal Greeting Cards (a box is now, or soon will be, available) and that each member of our Club is expected to sell at least one box—or else face the scorn and derision of the entire club membership.

President Seiden concluded by gracefully acknowledging our guests and our newest club members.

MEMBERS’ OBSERVATIONS: An announcement of the upcoming Bric-A-Brac sale was made, and we all were invited to bring in any items for appraisal. (Price: $25)

Sy Yuter then delighted us with the news that on November 5th (Mark that date on your calendar!) his cataracts are scheduled to be removed.

MR. LOU FITZGERALD’S COMMENTS ON THE MAGIC MASTERS’ BASKETBALL GAME
Mr. Fitzgerald stated that his committee is looking for four or five volunteers for the Magic Masters’ appearance at the Briarcliff High School on the 13th of this month. He showed us an advertising display piece, which would be placed in the window of Joe Weldon’s. as well as appearing in various locations throughout the village.

He urged us all to be there for the exhibition, which would feature the Magic Masters’, as well as several Briarcliff basketball greats, comprised mostly of Bob Maher.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker next week will be Seth Leitman. His subject:

“Life Project for Africa.”

(Note: Don’t forget to bring food for the Food Pantry!)

TODAY’S SPEAKER

Our speaker today was Briarcliff Historical Society President, Tom Vincent. He was eloquent in speaking of Briarcliff’s place in history.

Mr. Vincent started off speaking of the Phillips” family and of Walter Law, the founder of Briarcliff Manor, and of Mr. Law’s many contributions to the life of Briarcliff Manor,
“the town at the end of the Yellow Brick Road.” (I’ll bet you didn’t know that karaoke was invented in Briarcliff. Well, it was. But that’s a whole other story.)

Briarcliff began as a farming community and a rather fancy river town. But what makes Briarcliff “special”—in addition to its inhabitants—is its colorful landmarks: the railroad station, which became the Library; Law Park with its tennis courts, swimming pool, strolling paths and pavilion; Briarcliff’s eight glorious churches of varied denominations; its elegant Stanford White country club; the Briarcliff Junior College, (Now a part of Pace University); the Edith Macy Conference Center; and, of course, the famed Donald Trump Intergalactic Golf Course. (Gentlemen, please remove your hats!)

Briarcliff has had its celebrities, too: the author, John Cheever lived here, James Patterson lives here at present, and the modern dancer, Isadora Duncan, danced her heart out at Beechwood, and Johnny Weismuller trained for his gargantuan Olympic swimming feats at the old Briarcliff Lodge, since burned down--alas!

At one time Briarcliff was famed for its automobile Road Race, which drew upwards of 200,000 spectators and as the home of various social and business luminaries—the late Brooke Astor, for one, Ernie Pacchiana as another.

Mr.Vincent also spoke of our Caucus System, which is unique, in that candidates do not attach their names to either the Republican or Democratic parties and our historical Village Hall.

He closed by noting that at present there are 165 members of the Briarcliff Historical Society, but there is always room for a few more.

Any takers?

It was an informative and fascinating talk. Thank you, Mr. Vincent.

THE WEEKLY DRAWING: The winners were ?? (I’m sorry, I cannot find her name in my voluminous notes. Can anyone help me?) and new member Mark Risko. (Reverend Herzog, who was not in attendance, phoned in his outrage at not being named the winner in perpetuity.)

MEETING CONCLUSION:. The meeting ended precisely at 1:30 PM,. on a very high note: Zen Eidel was shot out of a cannon.

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING
October 24, 2009

TODAY’S INTRINGUING QUOTE

“He gave her a look you could have poured on a waffle.”
--Ring Lardner

THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

On October 24th, 1861, the first transatlantic telegraph system—pioneered by Samuel F.B. Morse went into service, making it possible to transmit messages from coast-to-coast. This was followed by the telephone. Then the computer. Then the—Oh, Gawd!!

*******
.
MEETING OPENING: President Seiden opened our weekly meeting to the sounds of a Trumpet Voluntary and wild applause precisely at 12:15 pm.

SALUTE TO OUR FLAG, PATRIOTIC ANTHEM, AND PRAYER: The Salute to Our Flag was headed by our national anthem was rendered wrenchingly by our very own Sy Yuter, and Bishop John ..

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: President Seiden started off his section of the meeting off by saluting our guest speaker, Mr. Scott Craven, of the Ossining Police Force He then announced that our membership stood at 32. Our goal is 37. For God’s sake, get cracking!

MEMBER’S COMMENTS: Marie Fuesy reminded us that there are “good buys” at the local Stop ‘n Shop. Frances Chu announced the upcoming Rotary dinner ($30 dollars apiece), and urged us all to attend. Bob Maher, who was sorry that he was not present,
revealed by proxy that the Harlem Magic Masters basketball team would be appearing soon at the Briarcliff High School. President Seiden stated that Briarcliff Rotary shirts were now available at a laughably low $25, that a Rotary Fellowship Dinner, supporting
AIDS research relating to newborn infants, was planned but was seeking a new available date, and that Long-Range Calendars were now being offered for $8--the proceeds of which would be donated to charity.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker the October 30th, will be Mr. Tom Vincent, Historical Society President, whose topic will be the “History of Briarcliff.”

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker this week was the aforementioned Mr. Scott Craven, who spoke interestingly on the history of “The Mouth of the Croton River”, on which he wrote his Master’s thesis.

A few of the highpoints of his talk: The Hudson is one of the largest and most highly-traveled rivers in the country. Croton Point has changed dramatically, as can be seen in aerial photographs taken over the years. The “Harmon” in Croton-Harmon wanted to create an Artists’ Community and gave the land for that unfulfilled purpose. That an ice glacier had a profound affect on the river, as can be seen by the huge rocks it left behind. That fishermen can still find a few striped bass and sturgeon in the river, if they are patient enough. That at one time there was an earthen dam across the Hudson. That in 1835, New York City was dying and was saved by water from the Hudson. And that the river is being dredged constantly for the sake of ship passage. (What he didn’t mention was that the Hudson River was a subject for many skilled painters and an inspiration and a source of solace for the rest of us.)

It was a fascinating talk. Congratulations, Mr. Craven!

###

THE DRAWING: The results of the weekly drawing: First-place winner, Julio Salazar; second-place, Marie Fuesy.

Bishop John heaved himself out of a window.

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR MEETING: Our weekly meeting ended precisely at 1:30 pm., at which point, the assembled Rotarians carried President Seiden around on their shoulders, singing “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow!”.

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 10/16/09 from Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING
October 16, 2009

TODAY’S INTERESTING QUOTE

“He turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.”
--David Frost

THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

On October 2nd, in the year 1924, the new ZR-3 Dirigible from the Zeppelin Corporation, set a world’s record for wingless transatlantic flight. I wonder what happened to its sister zeppelin—oh, you know the one I mean. What was it called—the Hindenburg?

*******
.
MEETING OPENING: President Seiden opened our weekly meeting promptly at 12:15 pm., with great flair and enormous dignity.

SALUTE TO OUR FLAG, PATRIOTIC ANTHEM, AND PRAYER: The Salute to Our Flag was headed by an enthusiastic Mark Seiden, our national anthem was rendered with aplomb by our very own Sy Yuter, and Bishop John wound things up with a highly- impassioned plea to The Almighty for mercy, forgiveness, and a pleasant October..

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: President Seiden started things off by reminding us of “Service Above Self!” He then proceeded to talk about the Grapefruit Sale, the Food Pantry, water wells in Africa, bicycles for girls, the upcoming Truck Show, and the many, many people who have fallen victim to troubled times. The message: Our Rotary chapter is doing well, but we must all continue to pitch in.

VISITOR’S DAY! Our first official Visitor’s Day was a tremendous success! There were seven (7) guests—so many that we had to set up a sixth table! (Guests have been known to turn into members, you know. Get it? Get it? )

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our official speaker next week, the 23rd of October, will be
Fialla Portnoy, whose topic will be “My Life.”

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker this week was most interesting: Mr. Carlo Pellegrini, a professional juggler. He opened his section of the meeting by speaking about “running away to join the circus and becoming a juggler.” Which is what he is—a juggler—although he chose, wisely, to stay home rather than to run away.

Mr. Pelligrini was amazing! He juggled balls, while continuing his talk: 2 pairs, 3 pairs, 4 pairs of balls, he kept in the air—all the time spieling, spieling, spieling away! Anyone could do what he does, he observed, provided they have five pairs of hands.

Don‘t believe it for a minute. He is extremely gifted. You have to be born with those reflexes. And he was.

A most enjoyable performance. Bravo, Mr. Pellegrini!

###

THE DRAWING: The results of the weekly drawing were most depressing. I didn’t win—once again. The winners know who they are, so I won’t bore you with the details.

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR MEETING: Our weekly meeting ended precisely at 1:30 pm., with Bishop John’s springing out of a birthday cake.

Respectfully submitted by

Definition of a football classic: A game, usually played on a Saturday afternoon, starring two friendly football teams, who are determined to beat the living daylights out of each other.

###

Our Annual Briarcliff-Pleasantville Football Luncheon took place here today. It was a gala affair, featuring star players and the coaches of both teams. But the nagging question was “Where were the pretty cheerleaders?”

There was much bragging and boasting on both sides, and the telling of excellent stories There was very little humility—thank Heaven!

Did you notice? There seemed to be a goodly number of female members in the Pleasantville Rotary Club

Hmmmmm.

Next year, the luncheon will be hosted by the Pleasantville Rotary Club. Polish up your
table manners, and let’s think about inviting more women into our Club.

It sure would beautify things.

From Facebook of Frances Chu - 10/9/09

On Friday 10/9 jointly with Pleasantville Rotary, Briarcliff Manor Rotary Club hosted annual luncheon for leaders of football teams of Briarcliff and Pleasantville High Schools. It was so refreshing to see that leaders of 2 rivalry teams were sitting next to each other, and exchanging gifts...

Are captains of football teams always so good looking?

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 10/2/09 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING
October 2, 2009

TODAY’S INTERESTING QUOTE

“I hate housework! You make the beds, you do the dishes—and six months later,
you have to start all over again.”
--Joan Rivers

THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

On October 2nd, 1928, the ongoing Taxicab War in Chicago increased in intensity, when two rival Yellow Cab garages were dynamite-bombed. Both companies stayed tight-lipped about the on-going feud.
(But both were secretly very, very put out.)

*******
.
MEETING OPENING: Our meeting was opened promptly at 12:15 pm. President Mark
Seiden was not present. It is rumored that he was out beating the bushes for home-buyers. However, Paul Rosen leaped into the breach and performed the Opening with great élan and dignity..

SALUTE TO OUR FLAG, PATRIOTIC ANTHEM, AND PRAYER: The Salute to Our Flag was rendered heroically by Sy Yuter, the ever-ready Paul Rosen led us in a rousing patriotic number, and Bishop John held us all in awe with his plea to The Almighty for mercy, forgiveness, and a pleasant Fall.

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: Temporary Chief Executive Paul Rosen welcomed visiting Rotarian Tom Guinness and heaped lavish praise on Antonia Conte, who was celebrating a birthday. Antonia is ever-young and ever-lovely.

MEMBERS’ OBSERVATIONS: Various Rotary members expressed great relief that Community Day was over, Geraldine Mahoney distributed handsome and useful Library bags. And we were reminded that new ID badges await all members in good standing. Ernie Pacchiana noted that the Rotary “take” was not as bountiful as last year’s, but not bad, all things considered. Free pumpkins were announced as available. And Julio Salazar was heartily welcomed back into the fold.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: There will be no official speaker next week. Instead, we
shall gather here at the Rec. Center to break bread with our cousins, the Pleasantville Rotarians, in celebration of the Briarcliff –Pleasantville football classic.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker this week was our own Mike Risko. Mike, head of the Ossining Music Center, gave us all a music lesson, passing out an Open-String-and Moveable-Chords-Chart, and then leading us all in loud, boisterous, and extremely funky version of God-Knows-What. (I was so stunned by the mass musicality of our little group that I was rendered temporarily unconscious.)

It was great fun, and a reminder that some are meant to play a musical instrument and some are meant to applaud.

Mike Risko is a great addition to our club. He is greatly admired and much appreciated.

Thank you, Mike, for a happy half-hour.

###

THE DRAWING: The results of the weekly drawing were so depressing that I absolutely refuse to comment. The only good news was that Bishop John may have been one of the winners. Bu then again….

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR MEETING: Our weekly meeting ended precisely at 1:30 pm., when Etrusca Consentino was shot out of a cannon.

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING

TODAY’S INTERESTING QUOTE

“If you want to clean your system out, sit on a piece of cheese and swallow a mouse.”
--Johnny Carson

THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

On this day, in the year 1973. Brigette LeeAnn Wilson was born. She was, as you will recall, Miss Teen Age USA, last year.

*******
.
MEETING OPENING: Briarcliff Rotary Club president, Mark Seiden, opened our meeting promptly at 12:15, while the Briarcliff High School Marching Band played
“Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!”
..
SALUTE TO OUR FLAG, PATRIOTIC ANTHEM, AND PRAYER: The Salute to Our Flag was rendered heartbreakingly by Sy Yuter and the national anthem by a golden-throated Peter Garth.

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: President Seiden reminded us of the upcoming Briarcliff Community Day, which would and did take place on the following day (Saturday), and urged all Rotary participants to sell, sell, sell--with the utmost dignity, of course. He then called our attention to the Briarcliff and Pleasantville Rotary Club annual clambake, scheduled.for Oct. 9, and which has been postponed. He followed this with the announcement that new Briarcliff Rotary-member name buttons would soon be available. (Huzzah!) And concluded with a plea for solid Fund Raising ideas from our members.

Picture: Mark Seiden & Mike Risko (new member)

HAPPY THOUGHTS, ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMMUNITY NEWS, AND A COLLECTION OF THIS AND THAT. Carl Weiner rose to announce proudly that he and his wife were celebrating a Wedding Anniversary. When the cheering stopped, Paul Rosen reminded us of his (Paul’s) upcoming birthday, when he will turn 107. This was immediately followed by Bob Maher’s reminder that the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team will be appearing at the Briarcliff High School very soon. Marie Fuesy urged us all to bring our food contributions to the Food Pantry next week. Julio Salazar followed pridefully with his announcement that he and his wife had been married for 15 happy years. Paul Rosen displayed the brand-new Briarcliff Rotary shirts (they are handsome!) and announced that we could own one for our very own for a ridiculously-low $25. Also, the Briarcliff Historical Society is sponsoring an Up-The-Hudson Cruise on October 4th. And our Club has sold yet another bench! (Ta Ra Ra Boomdeyay!)

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker next week will be a gentleman who will speak on a subject dear to the concerns of a host of Briarcliff Rotary members: Alzheimer’s Disease.

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker this week was Assemblywoman Sandy Galef.
Sandy is always interesting and once again she didn’t disappoint. She announced sadly that this year was the worst year, legislatively for New York, that she could recall: state aid to public libraries was cut, the Stimulus Package to schools came with strings attached, and State revenues were raised.

Assemblywoman Galef followed this with a reference to the difficult pension issues faced by the MTA, and said she was besieged by telephone calls from distraught Westchester residents concerning the issue of high taxes.

She also referenced her feeling of futility on the State budget, and her sense of frustration about the downside of text messaging.

She want on to note that employers who hire illegal immigrants would be prosecuted (including hiring illegal yard workers), although no enforcement procedures are currently in place.

Ms. Galef concluded with a nod to a law she has sponsored outlawing smoking in children’s playgrounds. Very, very harmful to little ones, she noted.

Ending on a more positive note, Sandy assured us that there is light ahead in the tunnel. Hold on and stay positive, she advised The best is yet to come!

Thank you, Sandy, for an interesting and most enlightening speech.

THE DRAWING: The first dollar-prize went to Sy Yuter (It was really Eleanor); the second cash prize went to Paul Rosen, who immediately ordered drinks all around.

In protesting the results of the drawing, Bishop John threw himself out the window.

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR MEETING: Our weekly meeting ended precisely at 1:30 pm, with a flyover of 1500 B-52 bombers.

Recording Secretary, Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING - 9/18/09 by Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING
September 18, 2009

TODAY’S INTERESTING QUOTE

“The first half of our life is ruined by our parents. The second half by our children.”
---Clarence Darrow

THIS DAY IN HISTORY.

Today is the eighteenth day of September, 2009. Only 104 days remain in the year.
What have you accomplished?

*******
.
MEETING OPENING: Briarcliff Rotary Club president, Mark Seiden, opened our meeting promptly at 12:15, accompanied by the Briarcliff High School Baton Twirlers.
..
SALUTE TO OUR FLAG, PATRIOTIC ANTHEM, AND PRAYER: The Salute to Our Flag was rendered beautifully by the worthy Mark Seiden, the very worthy Sy Yuter led us in our national anthem, and the most worthy Father Lee put a capper on things by giving thanks to Our Lord for a lovely autumn day.

PRESIDENTIAL COMMENTS: President Seiden reminded us of the upcoming Briarcliff Community Day (a week from tomorrow) urging us all to be in attendance at Law Park, suitably dressed and ready to sell, sell, sell! He then called our attention to the new Event Board, which highlighted the Briarcliff and Pleasantville Rotary Club annual clambake, scheduled.for Oct. 9, right here in Briarcliff, and to our semi-annual Visitors’ Day, which will take place on October 16—again right here at our hallowed Rec. Center. Mr. Seiden then reminded us of the Food Pantry drive and listed the various drop-off centers for contributions.

HAPPY THOUGHTS, ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMMUNITY NEWS, AND A COLLECTION OF THIS AND THAT. This week there are various birthdays and anniversaries of Rotary members to celebrate and a host of guests to be greeted and applauded.

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker next week will be our Assemblywoman,
Sandy Galef. Mark your calendars. Sandy is always interesting!

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our scheduled speaker this week was District Governor, Karl Milde, who graced our weekly meeting, accompanied by his charming wife.

The District Governor was most interesting, as he recounted upcoming Rotary events, including the Multi-District Foundation Center, scheduled on October 10 in White Plains, and the pair of On-To-Bermuda sojourns—the first, an 8 day trip on October 18 (an 8-day affair) the second on October 21st. (a five-day trip.)

He spoke also about 3 important Rotary projects: (1) Our Water project, which brings needed water to water-starved areas; (2) Our Health and Hunger Project, helping to put a dent in poverty around the world; and (3) Our Literary and Educational Project, which is helping people, educationally, world-wide and here in this country, as well.

The District Governor also paid tribute to the Gates Foundation, which this year is donating $100 million to inoculate people around the globe, and, next year, is contributing even more to inoculate three times that number. He urged our club to contribute $2,000 to that effort.

Mr. Milde went on to talk of many interesting things: the Paul Harris luncheon, which will take place at the University Club in Manhattan, and will feature an outstanding motivational speaker; the District Conference, scheduled to take place in Poughkeepsie, and in addition to a primer on Rotary’s contribution to the world, will include a private tour of the Culinary Institute and a tour of F.D.R’s nearby home; and, lastly, the celebrated Governor’s Ball, which will occur later this year.

It was a highly-informative and interesting look at the workings of Rotary.

Thank you, District Governor Milde.
.

THE DRAWING: The first dollar-prize went to one of our newest members; the second prize, to visitor Elaine Hayden.

In angry protest, Bishop John sulked and immediately announced a Vow of Silence for at least a half an hour.

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR MEETING: Our weekly meeting ended precisely at 1:30 pm, with a series of lusty Huzzahs and Hoorays from assembled Rotarians.

Recording Secretary, Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING 9/4/09 - from Don Wilde

BRIARCLIFF MANOR ROTARY CLUB MEETING
September 4th, 2009

TODAY’S MEMORABLE QUOTE

“Either this man is dead or his watch has stopped.”
--Groucho Marx

AND YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT BAD!

Warren Buffet, coming off the worst year of his storied career, lost an estimated $25 billion in 2008.

THE OPENING CEREMONIES: President Mark Seiden brought the meeting to order at precisely 12:15 pm. The announcement was greeted with loud cheering.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND THIS-AND-THAT’S: President Seiden kicked things off in this section of the proceedings by inducting new-Rotary members Seth Leitman and Mike Risko. Mr. Risko could not attend the ceremonies because of prior commitments.

Irrepressible Sy Yuter announced that he and his wife, Eleanor, had just returned from vacation, where he had body-surfed and where he and Eleanor had enjoyed the delights of the privileged.

Zen Eidel, tanned and vigorous, rose to state that he had just returned from his annual fishing trip. He caught a cold.

Ernie Pacchiana proclaimed that he was going to press with the Membership Piece
and urged all Briarcliff Rotarians to supply him with any missing credentials.

Gerry Mahoney excitedly announced that she had just returned from a 50-mile bike ride, and had the sores and bruises to prove it.

Rod Ertischek proudly proclaimed that Briarcliff was the recipient of the Government’s stimulus money.

Marie Fuesy thanked all Rotary members for help in the Food Drive.

And the lovely Shelley rounded things off by announcing the 15th anniversary of something important. (Paul Rosen was talking in my ear at the time, and I missed it.)

President Seiden came back to alert us to the fact that our annual get-together with Pleasantville Rotary will take place on October 2nd. Location: Here!

President Seiden announced also that October 16th is Vistor’s Day at the Briarcliff Rotary Club. You will make everyone happy if you bring along a prospective new member on that date.

There will also talk of our Yearly Grapefruit Sale, sometime in November. Those who will be out of town on that date will be promptly shot.

Paul Rosen startled us by announcing that Briarcliff-emblazoned T-shirts will be on sale for Community Day. He also stated that non-participating Briarcliff Rotary members will be shot or beheaded. Take your choice.

And there will be a Wizards’ Basketball game at the High School on Friday, November 12th. Proceeds from sale of mementoes will go our Club!

DON’T FORGET: COMMUNITY DAY IS THIS COMING SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th. PLACE: THE FIELD BY THE SWIMMING POOL.

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker this week was Briarcliff’s new Village Manager Philip E. Zegarelli. He spoke knowingly about several issues facing the village: the eternal water problem: water from Catskills or Croton? How does the Village deal with the ball fields, and the question of signs? How do we go about signing inter-municipal agreements with neighboring townships and villages? How do we keep tabs on our judicial system?
And a score of other problems.

He welcomed the problems (What would a Village Manager be without problems?)
and declared that he was “having fun” attempting to solve them. He loves the challenge!

He seemed totally at home in his new position, and thanked the Board and the Mayor for their full support.

A most interesting, and relevant, talk.

THE DRAWING: The winners this week were the ever-lovely Shelley and the ever-winning Bishop, who thanked God and all his angels for his good fortune.
Many thanks!

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR CEREMONIES: Our weekly meeting drew to an end when Peter Garth announced that he could fly and promptly threw himself out the window.

The items recommended by the Food Pantry are: Canned fruits, Canned vegetables,Tuna fish, Baked beans, and the always-popular Macaroni and cheese. Let’s try to fill at least one brown-paper grocery bag!

###

MEETING OPENING: Our weekly meeting opened officially at 12:16, or thereabouts.

SALUTE TO THE FLAG, SINGING OF A PATRIOTIC SONG, AND A PRAYER:
Our salute to the flag was led, heroically once again, by Sy Yuter, the rousing patriotic number was sung by golden-voiced Marie Fuesy, and the whole thing was wrapped up to a fare-thee-well by Bishop John, who led us in a plea to Our Maker for a little now-and- then understanding.

THE PRESIDENT’S REMARKS: Our bouncy new president got the meeting off to a roaring start with a list of committees and an appeal for chairmen thereof. He stressed that all the committees are important to our mission of service to the community!

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS AND ASTUTE OBSERVATIONS: It was noted that the Annual Briarcliff-Pleasantville Football Luncheon will take place here, on October 2nd. Mark your calendar, please!

On the following weekend--Saturday, Sept.12—Community Day will take place in Briarcliff. This is a monumental Fund-Raising Day for our Rotary chapter, and we all are urged to pitch in and do our part, serving famished locals in the Briarcliff Rotary Food Tent!

It was noted also that Friday, October 16th, is Visitors’ Day and all members are urged to bring a guest to our weekly meeting, as a potential Rotary member. This will be the kick-off of our Annual Recruitment Drive!

NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER: Our speaker on September 4th will by Mr. Eric Kaoyer, a representative of the “Sheltering Refugees in Need” program.

REMINDER: DON’T FORGET TO BRING FOOD CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE FOOD PANTRY ON THAT DATE!!!

###

TODAY’S SPEAKER: Our speaker today was Susan Grunthal, School Outreach Coordinator for Taconic Opera Co.

She started by alerting us to the news that that the Taconic Opera’s 2009-2010 season (their 12th season) will feature a list of glorious operas: Mozart’s Mass in C Minor (One performance only!), Giuseppe Verdi’s “Macbeth”, and a U.S. premiere:of a seldom heard double bill: Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” and Westerhead’s “Dona Flor.” Performances will begin on October 16th (“Macbeth”) and will end on April 25th, with, the U.S. premiere of the thrilling double bill. Prices range from $66 to $79 for season tickets (The $79 is for Aisle Seats.)

She pointed out that many local opera companies are closing their doors. But the Taconic Opera is holding on! She appealed to us for male singers! (Sy??????)

The opera’s home is nearby, the ticket prices are very reasonable (Briarcliff Rotary members receive a generous discount), and subtitles are always in English.

Give it a try. You’ll like it.

###

THE DRAWING: This week’s drawing was won buy two persons, neither one of which was Bishop John. The good Bishop immediately announced--he was among the losers-- that he was “fed up” with the whole thing and was immediately converting to Buddhism. .
OUR MEETING ENDED at 1:30, with an encouraging amount of back-slapping. .

Don Wilde
