Briarcliff Manor has 13 restaurants and businesses offering these discounts, Tarrytown has 27, Ossining 18 and Sleepy Hollow 6. Blood donations can be given by each person on a regular basis. SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Dr. Rolande Hodel, Cameroon-Aids free Africa Update

SUMMARY OF TALK

This was Dr. Hodel’s seventh trip to help Cameroon become Aids free. Our $500 grant provided sewing and knitting machines. The women make pullovers and sweaters but men take over the more complicated tasks. Money for treating HIVAids is the main goal. Antibiotics are given and help but some people die soon after. There are no doctors in the clinic and it is dirty with no bathroom. Village elders make psychological diagnoses. The drugs are inadequate and elders say “give me more.” She was often hungry and felt dirty and was anxious to leave after nine days but will return to Cameroon. Dr. Hodel looks forward to talking to us again.

Ben Sheen's parents were both musicians. While majoring in music at Oxford University, with the local Rotary Club, he applied for an Ambassadorial scholarship, which was granted to the tune of $26,000 for a year's learning. He picked the Julliard School in Manhattan and is majoring there in the organ.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Roderick Fraser – US Navy Operations in the Arabian Gulf.

SUMMARY OF TALK

Commissioner Fraser was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in 2006, the largest in New England and has greatly improved training, readiness and professionalism. After being commissioned in the Navy in 1986, he spent 20 years culminating in commanding USS Underwood, a guided missile ship home ported in Mayport, FLA. He led the ship and crew to the Northern Arabian Gulf and was responsible for protecting the Iraqi offshore oil terminals at Al Basrah and Khor Alamaya. He was also responsible for training the Iraqi Army in anti-terrorism to enable them to protect themselves. He has been awarded the meritorious service medal, two gold stars, achievement medals, unit awards and commandments.

SUMMARY OF TALK

The White Plains program includes a group therapy session for ages 4 through adult. Teams lead 45 minute group sessions of 4 – 8 children based on age of development. Individualized therapeutic goals and monitored by therapists and families. Heartsong is a not-for-profit which relies on the generosity of families, government grants and corporate grants. Therapy sessions occur in Yonkers and White Plains and include both art and music therapy. Dedicated volunteers often provide 1:1 ratio. Parent workshops and volunteer training is provided. SPEAKER AND SUBJECT: Rev. Lee Carrozzi on Christian Religions

SUMMARY OF TALK

Rev. Lee was raised as a Roman Catholic then converted to Methodism when he married his Methodist wife. He was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Church. He explained the differences of the various Protestant religions, being generally divided into predeterminists like Calvinists and those who individually decide their own spiritual faith like Methodists. He referred to suffering for your faith, mentioning the Saints who were burned at the stake for their religion, like Jean d'Arc. Zen and Anne contributed to the discussion by questions from Zen about the differences of the various Protestant religions and by Anne as to her religious beliefs. Sy noted that all of the Christians at the time of Jesus were Jews and that Saint Paul was the first Christian, having replaced Jewish law (including kosher eating and circumcision) with belief in the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion, and that Christianity was a great civilizing force.

SUMMARY OF TALK

This is his "90th" talk to Rotary. In 7.5 years, as Supt. and then CEO, went from 25 students at one location to 550 students at four locations. He handed out a brochure, done inexpensively since all of their money goes to educating the kids. An expectation of success helps them to develop their skills needed to interact in the larger world. School provides educational, residential, clinical, social and community services with active sports program. Most serve in very successful marching band.

This Friday talk by Dr. Krishnan Chittur on India, Pakistan and U.S. Security. Meeting will be at a table in Briar's dining room with club reimbursing each member with $10 credit toward the cost of their meals eating off the regular menu.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT: Prof. Dr. Surendra Kaushik on Women's Empowerment Through Higher Education.

SUMMARY OF TALK

Pace Professor Kaushik founded and helped fund the Mrs. Helena Kaushik Women's College in Rajasthan India in 1999. It is committed to educating women where only 1.5% of women have achieved a college degree. The goal: educate a woman and you educate a family, and then a community, a society and ultimately a nation. There is no better tool for development than the education of women and their empowerment. He showed slides of a very impressive college.

Next Friday Dec. 23 meeting at The Briar's dining room. We will eat off the menu with Rotary giving $10 credit to each attendee. Dr. Bob Maher will speak on Christmas to Infinity.

SUMMARY OF TALKS

Dr. Amsterdam discussed the savings from installing solar panels. Dr. Yuter discussed the main Mideast issue, whether Iran is building a nuclear weapons system. The Administration is pressing Israel not to attack the Iranian nuclear sites. Israel apparently believes it has no choice since Teheran has threatened to wipe out Israel. Dr. Yuter believes the Iranian goal, like that of Japan and Germany, is to have the option to develop nuclear weapons but will stop short of that option unless nuclear attacked.

Current residents are now 62 to 102. One client has been there for 15 years. They have to be self-transportable, able to get up from a chair by themselves. Some drive, they enjoy music, trips to museums, malls, movies, etc. They are served three meals a day in their room or dining room. The cost is @4,500 per month for a studio, including a bathroom, kitchen. There are many opportunities for socialization to provide a satisfying life.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT: Dr. Sy Yuter on Middle East Update

SUMMARY OF TALK

The top issue in the Middle East is whether Iran is developing a nuclear weapon. A Nov. 8 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency says there is evidence that Iran is conducting nuclear weapon experiments. The Agency reported that Iran has tested an "implosion device" needed to build a nuclear payload small enough to fit into the chamber of its Shahab 3 missile re-entry vehicle, that can reach any part of Israel. Both Americans and Israelis say they have not taken off the table a military strike against the Iranian nuclear facilities. Such a strike would produce a very dangerous response from Teheran. But Sy believes that Iran, like Japan and Germany, has enough nuclear fissile material to give Teheran the OPTION to build a crude nuclear weapon in a few months and a nuclear warhead arsenal in a few years. That is, that Teheran is not going to build or explode a nuclear bomb soon so its argument that Iran now is only conducting allowed peaceful nuclear experiments, and not building a nuclear weapon, is believable.

The current statistics are that over 23,000 people are reported dead or missing, 90,000 people are homeless or displaced from their homes. The nuclear threat is ongoing. The effects of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis were felt as far as Alaska and California and chipped off portions of the Ice Shelf in Antartica. This is truly a global disaster.

All of our proceeds (admission, raffle, auction) will go straight to an area of Japan near the center of the crisis, where the Japanese Medical Society of America has created a program in cooperation with the Japan Society, focusing on establishing a long-term network of support for mental health relief. The President and VP of the JMSA will be at our concert to tell guests a bit about this important project.

The gatekeeper program was created to help recognize, identify and refer older adults, who may be experiencing or a risk for depression or a anxiety, for help. This puts them at risk of losing their ability to live independently as long as possible. They seek to reduce isolation which can accompany untreated mental issues. Gatekeepers may be police officers, volunteers, clergy, hairdressers, librarian’s or anyone who comes into contact with older adults.

The Rotary Foundation is a very unique charity. Half the money you put in comes back to you in matching grants program. Our main goal is to eradicate polio around the world and we are very close to this goal. There is an acronym which means doing good in the world. The inception of Rotary was in 1917. A main focus was eradicating poverty. The speaker has been extremely inspired with projects which make money. In Africa, war lords need to be convinced that Rotary will help the people. The 20^th centennial is being planned. He recommended that the club pick a subject, perhaps with a merging Rotary Club (Ossining). A water project would be excellent, as well as scholarships.

Harlem Magic Masters event a great success!

Harlem Magic Masters game was a tremendous success!! We had over 350 children and adults in the stands. That will ensure a wonderful 2012 for the Rotary scholarships!!

More importantly...Bobby Maher has reported that he has received several glowing e-mails about the Event from parents; I have heard from many, many people about what a great time their kids had; and take a look at the attached pictures from the assemblies…I think they say it all!

I know I have had many Happy Thoughts during meetings, but the following peoples' help was SO appreciated...The event could not have been as successful without:

Bobby Maher - for EVERYTHING he did!! This event truly would not be half as successful without his leadership and heart!!

Dean & Ken R. who went out of their way to sell ads in the program.

Dean, Ken S., Lou, Antonia, Ken R., and Rachel who sold tickets at the PTA Book Fair.

Forced arbitration clauses appear in every day products like credit cards and bank accounts. If you have an issue like an unexpected charge then the clause requires you to arbitrate rather than litigate the issue. Disputes can be settled by a Rabbi who is trusted by both sides. In the absence of a forced arbitration clause, a common issue can be litigated in a class action in court. A late payment charge may come in after the payment. Beware of forced arbitration clauses.

Starting in 1707 after a hundred years of fighting, Scotland and England passed laws unifying the two countries. Glasgow is the largest city and the capital. Scotland is a very scenic and beautiful country. It is famous for its mountains and coastal areas. In deep Loch Ness lake is a mythical creature said to appear at times and tourists are always asked if they saw “Nessie”. Ann lived about 20 miles from there. Lockerbie is the place where Americans were killed by a bomb that downed Pan Am flight. Scotland is well known for it’s golf courses. Donald Trump tried to build one but farmers refused. Last May there was a vote to make Scotland an independent country. We will have to see if they can make it on their own. For much more on the history of Scotland please talk to Ann.

In the winter of 1981, the Rotary Club of Briarcliff Manor held its first fundraiser – a Christmas tree sale. Their total profit was $4.00. “About one hundred trees were trucked in from Vermont,” recalled Paul Rosen, the Club's third president and charter member. "A bad ice storm made our inventory almost unsalable."

They've come a long way since then. Anyone walking through the Village on Pleasantville Road or in Law Park will surely notice at least one of the fifty benches supplied by the Rotary Club after successfully raising $100,000 over a period of 6 to 7 years. Ernie Pacchiana, the Club's fourth president, charter member and treasurer for the past twenty years, stated that about half that amount was spent on the benches, and the remainder for various charitable contributions.

This year their hope is to put a statue of Walter Law, founder of the Village, in front of the municipal building on Pleasantville Road. "The estimated cost is $35,000," said Mr. Pacchiana.

The number of Rotary Club projects over the years are, in fact, almost too numerous to list. They include college scholarships for community service over and above what's required for graduation, a Mother's Day luncheon with entertainment for the senior citizen community, gowns for last year's graduating class at Sing Sing Prison, a 15- year sponsorship of a Harlem Magic Masters basketball game (similar to the Harlem Globetrotters), providing the food at community day each year, and along with Interact Club (the high school version of the Rotary), the purchase of several wells in Africa and self-contained shelter boxes for families in Haiti and Japan.

“I've continued to be impressed by our ability to track new people who are willing to work in an organized way for the benefit of our community,” said Mr. Rosen. “We've always kept our ranks at a workable level for the projects we undertake.”

Every Friday at 12:00 noon, members gather at the Briar's Restaurant on North State Road for their weekly meeting and luncheon. At each meeting, Sy Yuter, a 22-year member, past president and program chair, has managed to provide illuminating and varied speakers including many of the Club's own members. Among the speakers were an emergency medical technician, a wildlife biologist, a director of occupational therapy, a teacher of the blind, an attorney of international law and a veterinarian who does house calls. Among the more recognized names were Brooke Astor, Alan Arkin, Sandy Galef and Jeanine Pirro.

The one speaker that seems to have impressed members the most is Hillary Clinton when she was New York State Senator. Mrs. Clinton was brought to the club by its now deceased and very highly regarded second president, Leonard Young, a realtor whose office was in Chappaqua where the Clintons resided.

"Clinton was unlike any politician that has ever been there before," said Mr. Rosen. Her speech was very effective. She was highly personable in a small group setting and didn't rush off like other politicians have. She talked with people and was down to earth." Mr. Pacchiana, who identified himself as a conservative Republican, concurred; "Clinton – you can't get any better than that." "She spoke about all the outstanding issues of the time without a single note in front of her," said Mr.Yuter.

Rotarians are expected to attend meetings regularly, and have options to do so when they travel. There are 34,118 international Rotary Clubs. Members are encouraged to attend meetings in other locations worldwide. In 2003, when Sy Yuter and his wife, Elinor traveled around the world, he was able to keep his perfect weekly attendance record.

“In South Korea, a pianist played the piano during the whole meeting,” said Mr. Yuter. “In London, in what was probably the oldest club, waiters were in tuxedos and wine was on the table. In Moscow, they did not serve dinner. It was too expensive. Hors d'oeuvres were served at the bar. In Cairo they did breakfast at a hotel.”

“In Madrid, meals go on forever,” stated Mr. Rosen who has also attended meetings overseas. “They started at noon and ended at 4:00. In Jerusalem, I paid $25 for coffee and cake. It was 6:30 pm. I was hungry. I complained. They apologized and brought me an egg salad sandwich.”

Membership at Briarcliff Manor's Rotary Club, which includes the weekly luncheon meetings, is $650. Anyone who is interested and lives within the Village or bordering communities should contact the current president, Dean Dykeman, at 914-557-1568.

This meeting was especially meaningful for educators Dr. Fran Wills and Dr. Bob Maher. The speaker started by saying that our children are all right. Sometimes parents do not read to their kids and this indifference does not lead to success. Changes like using laptops, twitter and face book has lead to success. Teaching just for tests does not help educate the whole child. Children need citizenship education for a well rounded education. A full year school calendar might turn out superior students. Most children do finish traditional high school but some do better in a trade school instead of college. There are criticisms of current students, but Socrates had same criticisms millenniums ago.

SUMMARY OF TALK

Dr. Zalvan explained the important facts of maintaining your voice. He expressed ideas that some of us never realized were important. Acid reflux leads to gastro esophageal reflux disease, known as GERD. Among the voice disorders that cause problems are chronic smoking, yelling, dehydration, aging and vocal fatigue. Everyone has some degree of post nasal drip and gargling will not help. What will help is maintaining a healthy weight. Many Americans have poor diets. Common sense will help with potential voice problems. No antibiotics should be given for voice problems. It is never too late to deal with voice problems. New York last state to adopt no-fault divorce. Can be based on relation broken for over six months. About half marriages end in divorce. A strain on the family especially if includes children. Regular divorce fees can be as much as $100,000. There is a Bill of Rights for children. Mediator asks parties to find solution. If agree, they sign agreement, especially concerning custody of children. Mediator suggests retain attorney if sign agreement. Financial expert can be helpful. There is a web site to choose collaborative attorneys like Lauren Morrissey. Divorce mediation much cheaper. Sometimes cannot sell house so both live apart in house. Collaborative mediation avoids trial and judgment.

Government reform is in the forefront of Sandy Galef's objectives for the 2012 legislature. Governor Cuomo has been a strong governor so the budget was enacted easily. The Village and Town of Ossining's courts have been combined. She is dedicated to providing the best representation possible. She wants to make New York more competitive to live and work. Among the bills she has sponsored or supported are: Fiscal Reform; Tax Cap Bill; Mandate Relief; Local Court Consolidation: Regional Economic Development and Paper-Free Legislature. After elementary, high and college at Edinburgh Scotland, came to this country from South Scotland 25 years ago and got bachelor's and master's degrees here. Taught and tutors math and English. Also in the pharmaceutical consulting business. Went to Scotland to meet old boy friend for five days, Ken Wilson, and together attended an historic gala event. Visited Edinburgh Castle, military bands and Scott regiments. Drove right-drive rented car on left side of narrow village roads occasionally hitting bendable rear view mirrors. Posted map of Scotland and posters including famous views of Scotland. Enjoyed 400 mile lake and birds. Scots don't care much for English. Talked about Queen Elizabeth 1, who chopped off the head of a possible successor. Also talked about the Tudors, Ivanhoe, McDonalds, and Campbell's, and how Henry VIII changed allegiance from The Pope to Church of England 250 years ago. Mentioned Sean Connery and Scotch whiskey.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Ted Kuhn – Music appreciation at Sing Sing Prison

SUMMARY OF TALK

The first thing that Ted Kuhn told us about was how violent the inmate population is. They have plenty of time to reflect upon their situation and what they could do for the next 20 or 30 years. Finally some accept the idea of further education and take courses. Some are fine students and support each other. The inmates are a captive audience and there is pressure to succeed. Recently 200 inmates received a Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science from Mercy College. A popular course is music appreciation. Some like jazz or classical music. The two hour class was singing Gregorian chants. They are taught the identification of musical instruments. Ted Kuhn plays the violin but could not bring it in because the inmates would have the ability to pull off a string and endanger someone. There are many religious conversions in the prison. Rachel’s father has performed many weddings within Sing Sing prison. At their graduation, the actor Tim Robbins, of the movie Shawshank Redemption, gave a graduation speech and Harry Belafonte spoke, being given an honorary degree.

Ken has been a member of our club for 25 years. He said he has always had a strong fear of earthquakes. There is an anti-nuclear generation sentiment in Japan. After the disaster, there was a shortage of electric power throughout the country. They did have disaster preparedness but many of the old houses are made of wood. There is a strong building code for new concrete buildings. The Japanese have a history of photographing their families, their surroundings and before and after shots. People collected picture albums from the debris. They strongly revere their ancestors. Japan has one half of the population of the United States but live in a small area. The Rotary Clubs in Japan are meeting again except for the Fukushima clubs near the damaged reactor.

SUMMARY OF TALK

All commentators agree that Obama is following a multilateral retrenchment foreign policy that requires UN Security Council support sometimes at the expense of US foreign policy interests, like in Libya. An administrator supporter said “If you were to boil it down to a bumper sticker, it’s “Wind down these two wars, reestablish American standing and leadership in the world, focus on a broader set of priorities from Asia and the global economy to a nuclear-nonproliferation regime.” A pro-Bush analysis of Obama’s foreign policy was “less assertive, less dominant, less power-minded, less focused on the American people's particular interests and less concerned about preserving U.S freedom of action. It is true that he did not simply pull the plug on the war in Iraq as he promised he would do, and that he increased the commitment of troops in Afghanistan. But those comprises reflect the president’s pragmatic judgment about the art of possible, not his conviction about what kind of country America should ultimately become.” An Israeli view is that he is pro-Palestinian, but his administration supports Israel financially and militarily, as Bush did. He is willing to act unilaterally to defend against attacks against the US.

Dr. Bob Maher is the executive director of St. Christopher’s School and the Clark Academy of the Greensburg – North Castle Union Free School District. He told us about the students accomplishments and scholarships. He proudly noted class academic achievements and scholarships awarded. Clark Academy valedictorian is headed to LaGuardia Community College in Queens, NY and the salutatorian is headed to Manhattan Fashion Academy of Technology. Clark Academy’s marching band received a donation for uniforms for their drum corps. Students have been building relationships with senior citizens who attend the town’s senior lunch program. They have been developing social skills and some have developed strong bonds. A wonderful and positive environment for these students.

Helen Lynch, nicknamed “the hugger”, is the District 7230 District Governor. She spoke to us about the importance of the four way test which we recite at every meeting. We were reminded by new International Rotary President Kalyan Banerjee of India to reach within ourselves to embrace humanity. She emphasized three things this year.

Family - where we let our hair down and feel most comfortable.

Continuity – when our habits are similar every year, but renew with new thoughts and ideas.

Change – this leads us with over 106 districts to work together and the future vision for Rotary local and international.

Future matching grants from International Rotary have to be over $25,000. So local chapters will have to combine big projects.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Peter D. Cimini, novelist – Missing and exploited children

SUMMARY OF TALK

This speakers task began in 2005 when he was asked to write an article on kidnappers and predators of children. This led to his writing a novel, The Secret Sin of Opi. An act of congress provided a clearing house for missing and captured children. Most returned home unharmed. Prior to 2002 police would wait 24 hours before investigating. Brain affected predators emotions. Their brains lit up and subjects started feeling sorry for their capture. His fictional book explored the theme of Stockholm Syndrome and the effects of long term captivity. He recalled Patty Hearst and others who were put in isolation. Their captives formed bonds with their predator and in one case, when the predator died; the kidnapped person mourned his death.

Blythdale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, NY is a national leader in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of children with life threatening and complicated medical needs. They treat patients from birth through age 19 regardless of economic status. Their nursing staff provides expert care in a 92 bed inpatient hospital, a day hospital program and outpatient programs. It is the only hospital in the state with an on-site pre K – 12 public school. Their work starts when a child’s stay at an acute care hospital ends. They provide individualized care and an unsurpassed therapeutic regimen. They have experience with traumatic brain injuries, burns, organ failure, pre and post transplant, brain tumors, feeding disorders, and much more. Their goal is to help the patients to return home. SUMMARY OF TALK

Several types of Medicare plans are available, company plans, like IBM, etc, Advantage plans which can pay for extra services like hearing aids, and original Medicare. There are physicians who accept assignment with Medicare which means they agree to accept the 80% Medicare allows and the patient pays the 20%, unless they have a secondary policy. There are physicians that do not participate with Medicare, however you can still see them but must pay the physician in full at the time of service and get reimbursed from Medicare. You can be charged 15% above Medicare’s rates. There are “freebies” which include wellness visits once a year, mammograms, colonoscopies, etc but ask the office up front so you are not charged. Medicare pays for a second opinion. Any procedure can be appealed if there is a denial. Patients and physicians can request an appeal. Hospital status must be obtained to see if you are an inpatient or an outpatient, especially when admitted to the emergency room. The possible changes to Medicare under the Obama insurance plan is yet to be finally determined. Physical therapy is covered up to $1800 per year but additional visits, if needed, must be requested by the ordering physician.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Dr. Rolande Hodel, Betty K. Lewis – HIV/AIDS in Camaroon, Africa

SUMMARY OF TALK

The two speakers talked about their mission to make Africa free of aids. They were like Rotarians in the way they interacted with us because they also believe in service above self. Dr. Hodel is a frequent speaker and brought us up to date with her program. One of the children she spent time with did not call her auntie but called her mom. The village has a population of a few thousand, with one out of five who are HIV positive and it is spreading. It has one clinic, one nurse and no doctor. People may not even know they have it. Antibiotics, antifungals, pain killers and IV fluids have been provided. There is no infrastructure. Dean presented Dr. Hodel with a check for $500.00 from Rotary to be invested and used to provide sewing machines. SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Robert Chuckrow, PhD, Tai Chi

SUMMARY OF TALK

Tai Chi (pronounced tie jee) is a meditative exercise based on ancient Chinese philosophy and other principles of health, self development and self defense. It’s natural relaxed movements promote inner calm and improve self awareness, balance and coordination. Studies have confirmed that those who practice Tai Chi are less susceptible to falls, have improved blood pressure and experience less Rheumatoid Arthritis pain. Dr. Chuckrow demonstrated his skills with his son-in-law, Mike Risko, by urging him to attempt to push him over. Mike was unable to due so because of Dr. Chuckrow's use of Tai Chi. A round symbol with black and white represents Tai Chi, the black is female and the white is male. It represents opposites, up or down, hard or soft. Dr. Chuckrow appeared very graceful, even when he demonstrated the almost violent movements of his Chinese fan, again always showing opposites, open and closed.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT – Dean Dykeman – Ideas for a signature project for Rotary

SUMMARY OF TALK –

The main message of the meeting was how to introduce the Briarcliff Rotary to our village to gain more members. Rachel’s idea was to host coffees and invite friends and neighbors who may be interested in Rotary and for each of us to bring at least one idea for a signature project. Sy recalled that the Mayor was a member, as well as village trustees and our village manager and they could be invited. Mark stated that Leonard Young was a “recruiting machine” and it worked for him. Reverend Lee suggested extending personal invitations. Frances remarked that we have a web site that can be read by many and should be shared. A suggestion was made about the possibility of helping the Ossining Rotary Club with their goals. A live auction was suggested, similar to the one we had at our holiday dinner. Shelley, Bob Amsterdam, Eric Messer and Zen are thinking ahead. Mike Risko socializes with age 40 and over in Facebook. Kris is our president elect and is thinking of next year's projects. It is all about recruiting people and spreading the word about what we do. Please e-mail your suggestions.

Commissioner Lauro’s speech was about the County Department of Public Works which covers the curbside recycling guidelines and the changes as of June 2011. A new recycling facility is being built in Valhalla.

Blue recycling bins – plastics 3 – 7 have been added to the county’s list of mandated recyclables. Plastics now include food, beverage, detergent containers and caps, rinsed clean.

Brown paper bags – Newspapers, glossy inserts, phone books, magazines, junk mail, paper town and toilet paper tubes, non waxed cardboard boxes flattened and clean. No hardcover books.

Garbage collection should include kitty litter, dry cleaning plastic bags.

The County mobile shredder will be back in Briarcliff at 1111 Pleasantville Road in December 2011, date to be determined.

E-commerce means marketing products on the internet. Broad band is the high speed transfer of data which makes E-commerce possible. Amazon and Google have played a major role in this development. Mr. Wasserman explained the history of E-commerce in great depth. In 1997 he was working in music, children’s toys and more in Monroe, Connecticut. His company is one of the top in the country. In 1986 the game of Trivial Pursuit came about. He realized that if you build it they will use it. After 2001 there was a shake-up and a proliferation of broad band made the golden era of E-commerce. Google is the most important for searching current trends. Searchers under 40 use Face book and other social networks. They read, use mobile devices, etc. Amazon is not in New York, but in Texas and California. An interesting question was about creating a domain and you can, either very long or a new word, or one can be bought.

Cornerstone #1 – Customer experience – how fast and how long. A new category is navigation sites, multiple browsing sites for size, color, etc of products.

Cornerstone#2 – Marketing – the crutch field in New York is a good customer source where a customer can use personal photos, however it is like having a “big brother watching”. E-mail is offered for free which is a good incentive.

SUMMARY OF TALK –

Our speaker came here in 1983 from India and lives with her husband and her ten year old daughter in Chappaqua. She heard about the 2007 Clinton Foundation and wanted to help. Their job is to give medication to save lives. Some children are in Catholic orphanages and some are outside of Mumbai. A major problem is the people who drive around the country and spread Aids. Women and girls, young and old, must be educated to know how to protect themselves. After many other passions in her life, writing books, designing gardens, she enjoys serving her community above all.

SUMMARY OF TALK – Dr. Robert Maher, Rotary member, educator and former Principal at Briarcliff High School. He spoke to us about his current position as head of St. Christopher’s Academy and reported on the Academy being one of the top schools in America. He was recently interviewed by the New York Times about the amazing accomplishments of the students. They drew beautiful sketches that were displayed in their gymnasium. They were all sold and helped them to raise money. These children are among the poorest and most disadvantaged. This was a wonderful accomplishment by these students and a day to remember for them for the rest of their lives.

HAPPY THOUGHTS -.Mark Seiden ate alone at his table and loved it., Bob Maher was interviewed by the NY Times about his arts festival. Fran Wills - Congratulations to Bob Maher. Dean Dykeman - his daughter has returned from college and drove herself home safely in 10 hours. Chris - Osama Bin Laden!, great vacation at a working ranch, family visiting until September. Depressing thought by Chris was that it is open season on consumers due to the denial of the right to go to court for small claims.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Ernie P is recovering well from surgery, Eric Lebenson sustained a knee injury. The new car wash on North State Road will hold a fundraiser for the Briarcliff SPCA with a kids fair and fire safety demonstrations by the Briarcliff Manor Fire Dept on May 21st from 10:00 a.m to 3:00 pm. The flyer for Disaster Relief sponsored by the Rotary will be coming out next week.

SPEAKER AND SUBJECT - Dr. Fran Wills - Race to the Top

SUMMARY OF TALK

The major concern is inequity in the education system with reference to minorities. It is being seen as an intractable problem. It is seen more with test results and the learning taking place which has become more about poverty than ethnicity when it is really examined. Race to the Top started with the program of No Child Left Behind.

In the 1950's - only 50% of students graduated. In the 1960's there was a failure to address education. In the 1970's there were further failures. In the 1980's the nation was at risk. Our public education is one of the best in the world. The need is to tackle equity in education, particularly in poverty.

The Federal Government has challenged states for changes to equity issues. The States fund more for education that the Federal Government. As of now, the Federal Government still has ongoing testing for rating schools and it should be used to improve schools. New Issues - reform is being addressed with guidelines for better teachers by using test grades and growth analysis is being addressed where scores for teachers come from students achievement and student population.

3012C is a new legislation standard way of teachers being evaluated from test scores, part local, part practical and part observations from administrators. Results are in a composite score for every teacher and administrator. The Federal Government has to determine how to eliminate ineffective teachers after two years of trying to improve their methods.

New Law being discussed - Due process for tenure.

This was a wonderful and informative lecture and I apologize, in advance, if I could not capture everything she educated us on.
